But learn to pick up cues, and curb your desire to win in the short term.* THEY ARE ALWAYS LEARNING, PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND WORKING TOWARDS AN UNATTAINABLE GOAL. GROW your village (network in business and personal life) GROW your influence (passively through action not will) Winning in its essence is accomplished by defeating or putting another down. Successful business in it's essence is achieved by boosting up those around you, growing together, and profiting from each others success and growth.Ĭompetition becomes a distraction and a detriment as your focus is consumed by winning (not "Getting Shit Done"), and steps necessary to accomplish getting your point across with approval from others.įLIP THE SCRIPT. Focus your energy 100% on objectives that make you money, improve your relationships, and enhance your ability to GROW. The biggest lesson I learned: A winner never wins! Successful business is not always about winning, but often about compromise. When you become a business owner, working with you becomes a choice. There is an evolution from quiet acceptance, to open and welcome contradiction, or even in some cases outright confrontation of ideas. If they don't like you, they can simply walk away.

As a top performing employee you are used to winning, perceiving that you are a thought leader, and unknowingly forcing your will. People graciously "listen and partially accept" your stances and opinions without full push back. This quote hit home for me because it struck on one of the greatest lessons I learned (through pain and force feeding none the less).įrom a young age we are groomed to be the best in sport, best in school, win awards, graduate Ivy and get a great job. Society ranks you based on this cookie cutter format, and companies pull you in to be their greatest "creators and thinkers" within the confines of their leaderships will, and the companies structural and cultural bubble.įrom kindergarten to career we cut throats and kick, scream and claw our way to the top. Underneath the projection of our corporate facade, that gets along, plays fair, and is a team player. We are rewarded for winning and defeating those around us, and it is celebrated. "A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits", arguably one of my favorite quotes from a book that has been the gift that keeps on giving, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (a timeless study of how many of Americas great leaders sustained success by gritting their teeth, and persevering).
